All of this is offered in a historic, riverfront setting whose past is on full display. There are deep ties to Abraham Lincoln, and the city was the home of the sixth Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858. The city also has a long history of kindness, providing refuge to Mormons after the governor of Missouri issued an extermination order, as well as to the Potowatomi Tribe on the infamous Trail of Death forced relocation. The city also is the home of noted abolitionist Dr. Richard Eells, who was convicted of helping a runaway slave in 1842.
